Read what music therapists are saying about the IMCAP-ND CMTE Course:

The IMCAP-ND Music Therapy Assessment training provided by John Carpente was an experience that opened my eyes to a new way of seeing and interacting with my clients musically, as well as giving an invaluable framework from which to communicate music therapy’s benefits for individuals with Neurological Disorders to administration, families, and staff. I find that I am relating to and understanding the needs of my clients on a much deeper level and that will greatly influence every facet of the therapeutic process with them in the future. This is an extremely valuable tool, and John presents it in such a way that is thorough, challenging, and creative! I highly recommend this training to any music therapy professional!”

“The IMCAP-ND course was career changing!!!!!! After15 years of a successful music therapy career it opened my eyes to a very positive child-centered way to communicate and assess –following the lead of the child. Coming from a school that uses  DIR/Floortime in the early intervention program, the IMCAP-ND method is a logical and well thought out process that marries music therapy and floortime. The assessment is ready to use and […]

Scoring IMCAP-ND: Using Numbers to Understand Relational Musical-Play Between Client & Therapist

einsteinHI all,

This blog post is inspired by a recent presentation in which I provided an overview of the Individual Music-Centered Assessment Profile for Neurodevelopmental Disorders (IMCAP-ND: A Clinical Manual there appeared to be an interest and somewhat a misunderstanding pertaining to the value of the rating scale numbers. It seemed as though some of the participants had difficulty understanding the true purpose of the rating scale numbers. To me it seemed that some folks were “mixing” working paradigms and thus may have been missing how the IMCAP-ND incorporates the value of the ratings. For example, how can you make sense or meaning, in regards to assessment, of relational and emotional  experiences in musical-play if you  if you are using a cognitive lens. The IMCAP-ND was created as a means of understanding  the client from the from the perspective of looking and listening to him/her from  “ground-on-up,” within the context of relational musical-play.  Hence, it is a developmental relationship-based framework that seeks to understand how the client perceives, understands, and make music with the therapist.

That being said, the frequency scale numbers of the IMCAP-ND are basically anchors that provide the therapist with a “musical” guide pertaining to understanding a particular target response provided by the client within the context of relational musical-play. Thus, it places responsibility onto the therapist in the areas of understanding a) the constructs and operational definitions of each music domain area, b) how to provide musical experiences or opportunities (and, how many) for the client in order to assess specific target response, c) how to observe visually and via listening,  d) what is intentional in terms of the client […]

Considering Musical Dimensions in Relationship-based Work: Overview of IMCAP-ND Presentation

Brochure

HI all,

Last Friday, on October 11th, nearly 200 participants attended the Rebecca Center’s SOLD OUT music therapy conference at Molloy’s Suffolk Center. It was an amazing day featuring a wonderful line-up of presenters, discussing IMCAP-ND (Music Therapy Assessment), Infant-Child Mental Health, Music-centeredness, treatment planning and goal writing, clinical practice of IMCAP-ND, and MT self-assessment. It was an honor for me to present along side Dr.Brian Abrams, Dr. Gerard Costa (Keynote), Jill Lucente,Gabriela Sofia Ortiz, and Dr. Suzanne Sorel.

Many of the participants who attended requested the powerpoints from the presenters. Thus, i will be posting each powerpoint on this blog as I recive them from each presenter (if approved)

All of that being said, I’m including my powerpoint presentation within this blog post. My presentation was entitled: “IMCAP-ND:  A Developmental Relationship-based Framework for Assessing Musical-Play Interactions.” The focus and purpose of the presentation was to simply provide an overview of the IMCAP-ND, creating a foundation for the presentations that would follow. The purpose was NOT  to provide a training on how to administer or apply the IMCAP-ND, rather, it was more about introducing the tool, providing participants with its purpose, function, foundations, as well as operationally defining some its key constructs.

IMCAP-ND Updates/Announcements!

IMCAPsoft-150x150Hi all,

Since the publication and release and the IMCAP-ND: A Clinical Manual, I have received a variety of emails regarding questions, requests for materials to use in clinical practice, as well as inquiries pertaining to IMCAP:ND training courses. Although I have created an IMCAP-ND Facebook page, I realize that many MTs that are interested in using or learning more about  the IMCAP-ND may not be a part of our Facebook community. Therefore, I thought it might be a good idea to include IMCAP information on this blog.

REQUEST FOR INTAKE FORM & ASSESSMENT/PROGRESS REPORT TEMPLATES

I have been asked by several IMCAP-ND Manual users If I would share the digital files of the IMCAP-ND Intake Form and Assessment/Report templates. Although they are located in the appendix of the manual, it would probably be easiest and more practical to have the electronic versions of the files so you can simply type your responses and reporting directly onto the document. Thus, I’m making those documents available to any IMCAP-ND Manual owners who would like them. if interested email info@dmhmusictherapy.com

REQUESTING ACTUAL CLINICAL SAMPLES OF IMCAP-ND SCORING REPORTS

For those of you working with the IMCAP-ND who would like scoring samples illustrating the use of the of the three rating scales as well as a completed progress/assessment report (PDF versions) please email info@dmhmusictherapy.com (THIS REQUEST WILL TAKE SOME TIME TO FULFILL AS WE ARE REQUIRED RECEIVE CLIENT PERMISSION BEFORE DISTRIBUTING ANY CLINICAL INFORMATION)

INTERESTED IN USING THE IMCAP:ND TO DETERMINE GROUP PLACEMENT

For those of you who are using the IMCAP-ND in clinical practice, has anyone incorporated it into their assessment process in regards to deciding if a client is musical-emotionally “appropriate” for a […]

Is There a Difference between the Music Therapy Assessment and Treatment Process?

discover
ATTENTION MUSIC THERAPY STUDENTS, EDUCATORS, AND INTERNSHIP SUPERVISORS!!!
Hi all, I’m looking to develop some dialogue dealing with the differences and similarities between the assessment and treatment Process. I’m particularly interested in the work phase protocols and procedures that MTs are employing in their work and how these change during assessment and then treatment.

I understand that for most or some MTs these processes may be an intuitive process. That’s what has guided my work process for many years until becoming an MT educator and clinical supervisor. Thus, I have always found it challenging to teach music therapy students this process of understanding, clinically, the difference in the work phases between assessment and treatment; and have found, for the most part, that they (students) grasp the concepts intellectually, however, at times , difficult for them to translate this into clinic practice. Thus, I’m posting these questions through the lens of an educator/supervisor. Hence, I’m looking to see how others manage this process and how they articulate it with their students and/or MT students.

I have found that, for some experienced clinicians, including myself, the process of understanding and conceptualizing these processes are reversed. We can act it out clinically in a relatively fluid and “easy” manner when working with the client, but may have difficultly breaking it down and articulating it to a student or new MT I terms of the dynamics, process, perspective, and action.

I would love to see what others think on these teaching and supervising challenges. I would love to hear from MT STUDENTS!

All the best,

John
