Asynchronous DIRFloortime-based Music Therapy Course

This asynchronous online course provides participants with the opportunity to take this 13 hour course course via video lecture segments. Following registration (allow for 48 hours before receiving materials), you will receive a confirmation that you’ve successfully registered for the course along with:

  • a video links/segments will be distributed via email
  • numerous resources including research articles, videos, podcasts, emotional rating scales etc.
  • an invite to a private Facebook page designed for all participants enrolled in DIR-MT courses. (This has become a great and fun platform for clinicians to exchange ideas, resources as well as to ask questions and comments related to the course)

This introductory course, specifically designed for music therapists, presents the theoretical framework, scientific evidence, and scope of application of the DIRFloortime within a music therapy context.

The course instructor is Dr. John Carpente, Ph.D., MT-BC, LCAT, DIR-C. Dr. Carpente is a credentialed DIRFloortime provider and is recognized by the Interdisciplinary Council of Development and Learning (ICDL) as an Expert DIR Clinician and Trainer.

Participants successfully completing this course will be able to:

  1. Identify common features of autism and other challenges of relating and communicating.
  2. Identify the key features of relationship-based approaches.
  3. Explore 6 Functional Emotional Developmental Levels (FEDLs) in the DIR® model and potential challenges that children face at each capacity.
  4. Understand the “I” in DIR – individual differences and how health, sensory processing, and regulatory challenges can impact a child’s development.
  5. Understand key principles and basic strategies of Floortime.
  6. Understand the role of relationship and family in the DIR® model.
  7. Understand the essential role of affect as it is related to the D, the I, and the “R”.
  8. Understand how to carry out music therapy interventions within a DIRFloortime framework.
  9. Understand how each of the four music music therapy methods can be employed within a DIR framework.
  10. Understand how to assess the type of music therapy method/s is clinical warranted based on the client’s profile.
  11. Understand how to conceptualize client’s, musically, within a DIR framework.
  12. Exploring how the DIR 6 Functional Emotional Capacities relate to specific musical responses with regard to the Musical Emotional Assessment Rating Scale.
