Behavioral Pragmatic Floortime Intervention, for children ages 3-12, is designed to provide guidance for parents of children who may require support in some of the following areas:
- sustaining attention and focus in oder to complete tasks such as homework and joint purposeful play
- engaging, interacting and/or playing with siblings and/or other family members in a purposeful manner
- adapting to new routines and flexibility
- manage emotional outbursts during transitions and/or when routines change
- calming self down after becoming upset
Behavioral Pragmatic Floortime Intervention (BPFI) is a parent-driven program in which a Floortime Practitioner (FP) provides guidance to parent/s and/or caregiver to help maximize parent-child interactions. The BPFI program provides a comprehensive assessment that includes understanding each child’s behaviors in order to create the most conducive environment for learning and interacting. Often times stereotypical neurodiverse behavior is mistaken for “acting out” and is typically responded to with behavioral methods without considering the biological basis of behavior.
Here’s how it works:
Initial Meeting (with Parent/s)
For the initial meeting, parents will be introduced to the DIRFloortime Model followed with a comprehensive interview regarding developmental history (this meeting does not involve your child). Parents will be asked to bring copies of all prior assessments, evaluations, IEP, etc.
2nd meeting (Parent & Child):
Assessment:
Parents will be asked to play with their child in an unstructured manner with provided developmentally appropriate toys. During the parent-child play session, the therapist may offer suggestions, tips, and techniques to help guide and foster interactions. Play sessions are recorded, observed and scored using the Functional Emotional Assessment Scale (FEAS).
3rd meeting (Parent)
Findings and Treatment plan:
A comprehensive report, based on the FEAS and the child’s developmental history, will be presented to the parents. Therapist and parents will review the report, discuss goals, and formulate a plan. In additon, parents will be provided with DIRFloortime® tips and techniques, all of which will be included in the report.
Coaching
An individually tailored program will be developed for parents and child to attend DIRFloortime sessions with a certified DIRFloortime practitioner. Sessions will focus on fostering meaningful interactions between parent and child for the intent purpose of assisting developmental growth based on the child’s unique interests and specific needs.
All sessions will include play, therapist-parent conversation, and DIRFloortime® techniques to encourage the next step in developmental growth.
Duration of treatment will be determined by need and progress.
Developmental Follow-up
A re-evaluation will be administered to assess progress. An FEAS will be completed and reviewed by parents and therapist. This re-evaluation will offer the parents insight into what strategies have helped further their child’s growth.
At this junction in services, a new treatment plan will be developed between parents and therapist to ensure maintenance of skills.
