Clinical goals are the building blocks of the treatment plan and guide the music therapy process. Goals are designed to be specific, realistic, meaningful, measurable and tailored to meet the needs of the client. Generally, in music therapy practice, clinical goals tend to focus primarily on conventional domain areas of health such as motor, cognition, emotional, speech and so on. This course will focus on understanding music as its own domain of health and will introduce ideas and examples related to crafting operationally defined, measurable and meaningful music-centered goals.

Topical areas will include: 1) rationale for music-centered goals 2) music interaction as an expression of health, 3) the systematic process of crafting measurable music-centered clinical goals and  4) disseminating clinical goals/outcomes and rationale to non-music therapists (i.e., other disciplines, school administrators, clients, parents, caregivers, etc. Participants will have an opportunity to craft sample clinical goals and exchange thoughts on how to disseminate information to non-music therapy professionals while using music-centered language in a relatable manner.
