Improvising Musical themes with Clinical Intent

Musical themes are the “playing field” for musical interaction in which clients are provided with opportunities to engage and express. Through the creation of themes that are built around the client’s musical, behavioral, and/or emotional cues clients may experience empathy, predictability and feelings of safety that can enhance the relational music making experience. This course explores the intersection between clinical-musical themes and syntax and how they serve as a foundation for providing opportunities for engagement. Crafting Measurable Music-Centered Goals

Clinical goals are the building blocks of the treatment plan and guide the music therapy process. Goals are designed to be specific, realistic, meaningful, measurable and tailored to meet the needs of the client. Generally, in music therapy practice, clinical goals tend to focus primarily on conventional domain areas of health such as motor, cognition, emotional, speech and so on. This course will focus on understanding music as its own domain of health and will introduce ideas and examples related to crafting operationally defined, measurable and meaningful music-centered goals. Visit this page for more information about the course.
