This introductory course, specifically designed for music therapists, reviews the theoretical framework, scientific evidence, and scope of application of the DIRFloortime within a music therapy context. This course may be completed in-person over the course of 2 full days or online (virtually) in 2-3 hour blocks for 4-6 meetings. This course is facilitated by Dr. John Carpente, Ph.D., MT-BC, LCAT, DIR-C. Dr. Carpente is a credentialed DIRFloortime provider and is recognized by the Interdisciplinary Council of Development and Learning (ICDL) as an Expert DIR Clinician and Trainer.

DMHS is a CBMT approved provider (Provider# P-199). This course offers 13 CBMT credits

This course schedule will be taught virtually using a video-conferencing platform. After registration has been processed, you will be sent a link to a video conference link that you will use for the entire 4 class meetings of the course

Class 1 (3 hours)

    • Music therapy & Floortime
    • Realizing Floortime with the 4 music therapy methods: improvisation, composition, receptive
Understanding each client’s biological & musical differences will inform how we craft musical experiences to maximize interaction

Participants successfully completing this course will be able to:

  1. Identify common features of autism and other challenges of relating and communicating.
  2. Identify the key features of relationship-based approaches.
  3. Explore 6 Functional Emotional Developmental Levels (FEDLs) in the DIR® model and potential challenges that children face at each capacity.
  4. Understand the “I” in DIR – individual differences and how health, sensory processing, and regulatory challenges can impact a child’s development.
  5. Understand key principles and basic strategies of Floortime.
  6. Understand the role of relationship and family in the DIR® model.
  7. Understand the essential role of affect as it is related to the D, the I, and the “R”.
  8. Understand how to carry out music therapy interventions within a DIRFloortime framework.
  9. Understand how each of the four music music therapy methods can be employed within a DIR framework.
  10. Understand how to assess the type of music therapy method/s is clinical warranted based on the client’s profile.
  11. Understand how to conceptualize client’s, musically, within a DIR framework.
  12. Exploring how the DIR 6 Functional Emotional Capacities relate to specific musical responses with regard to the Musical Emotional Assessment Rating Scale.

Grievance Policy and Procedure

The mission of Developmental Music Health Services, LLC specific to Continuing Music Therapy Education (CMTE) is to promote the field of music therapy through advocacy, research, and education.

Each CMTE participant has the right to file a grievance. A grievance may be filed in regards to events, content, materials received. If you would like to file a grievance, please email the Approved Provider Continuing Education Director, John Carpente info@DMHmusictherapy.com within 2 weeks of completing the course. The Approved Provider will then take appropriate action to address the grievance and respond to the participant within 2 weeks of receiving the grievance. Action may include directly consulting with the participant and offering additional clarification.

The participant has the right to appeal any decisions made by the Approved Provider regarding the grievance. To file an appeal, please submit a formal letter via email to the Approved Provider at the email listed above. In the message/email, please state the original grievance as well as the reason for appeal. The Approved Provider will acknowledge receipt of the appeal and respond in writing within 2 weeks from acknowledged receipt. If these procedures have been followed and the participant is still unsatisfied with the result, he/she has the right to contact CBMT’s Continuing Education Committee regarding the unresolved grievance.
