Music Therapy-DIR 200: Promoting Foundational Musical-Emotional Developmental Capacities

21 CMTE Credits

Dates: Tuesdays 2pm-4:15 pm EST

March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, April 6, 13 & 20

This is a practicum-based course that builds on the course material of the introductory course and will help participants develop DIR-based musical-clinical competencies to help foster the first three musical-emotional/developmental capacities: 1) musical attention/self-regulation, 2) musical-affect/engagement and 3) musical adaption/2-way purposeful reciprocal communication. Participants will learn how to describe and apply the principles of DIR-based child-led music therapy while considering and supporting biological and musical differences in order to maximize musical engagement and reciprocal interactions.

As a part of this course, each participant will provide 1-2 brief case study presentation/s as means of illustrating the application of DIR-based music therapy principles and concepts in action.

Furthermore, this course will provide participants with a safe environment to engage in self-reflective discussions that are based on personal evaluation, course readings and lectures in order to continually adjust and enhance one’s understanding of DIR-based music therapy principles and its application to clinical work.

This course is facilitated by  John Carpente, Ph.D., MT-BC, LCAT, DIR-C. Dr. Carpente is a credentialed DIRFloortime provider and is recognized by the Interdisciplinary Council of Development and Learning (ICDL) as an Expert DIRFloortime Clinician and Trainer.

The completion of this course will earn participants the Basic Certificate of Developmental Relationship-based Music Therapist by Developmental Health Music, LLC.

Pre-requisite

In order to be eligible to register for this MT-DIR 200 course, you must have completed the DIRmt or DIR 101 course.

Requirements

In order to register for this course, participants must be currently working with clients as well as have permission to video record music therapy sessions. Please note that clients cannot be a relative or friend. Participants of this course will be required to present a brief case study to the group that illustrates an understanding of DIR-based music therapy principals and concepts. Your client can be of any age and diagnosis and must present with challenges in musical-emotional/developmental levels 1-3.

Learning objectives

  • Participants will be able to describe the central ideas of the first three musical-emotional/developmental capacities presented in this course: 1) musical attention/self-regulation, 2) engagement/musical-affect and 3) musical adaption/2-way communication
  • Participants will be able to describe the level of capacity and challenges regarding the first three musical-emotional/developmental capacities during their case study presentations
  • Participants will be about to create an individual profile (individual and musical differences) i.e., sensory reactivity, processing and motor planning development, visual spatial development, tempo-dynamic schema, musical conditions during their case study presentations
  • Participants will demonstrate the ability to follow the client’s lead to provide opportunities to maximize musical play interactions.

Self-reflection

  • Participants will demonstrate the ability to describe their own individual differences and functional emotional developmental capacities, including preferred interactive styles and musical tendencies under stress (i.e., what helps you stay regulated).
  • Participants will demonstrate the ability to engage in self-reflection (triggered by observation, group discussions, personal evaluation, readings and lectures, supervision, and more) to continually adjust and enhance one’s understanding of the DIR-based music therapy and its implications to one’s work.

Course Schedule

This course schedule will be taught virtually via zoom. After registration has been processed, participants will be sent a link to a video conference link that will be used for all 8 class meetings of the course. They will also receive various supplemental materials and resources for this course, via email, as well as an invitation to a private Facebook page which will be limited to registrants of this course.

Attendance: All classes will be video recorded and made available to participants, however, it’s required that participants attend a minimum of 5 of the 8 classes in order to engage in the group discussions. A main component of the course involves group discussion amongst the participants as well as sharing clinical work via case study presentations. Missed classes should be “made-up” by viewing recordings of the class.
